Hello NEaB,

 My last blog said I may be strapping back on my gold wings during April/May. Well, they have both now passed (who sped-up time so much???). It would be a great disservice to you all for me to just say "I may be back at the end of September" or something similar.

I am now entering the final academic year of my PhD and that must take priority. Certainly for the foreseeable future, I will not have time to return to gold wing duty. It was a great pleasure for me to serve the game during my time as active admin. I had a wonderful and fun time.Hopefully, one day I can return to that duty!

As you all have seen since March, I have still been very chat active and am still around to deal with emergencies when they arise and no-one else is around. There is no reason that will not continue. You will still see me (almost) every day. I just wanted to give an update, as some people started to ask.

 Once again, a message to ALL the players I have come across in the last 5 years: thank you all for making NEaB something I am immensely proud to say I have been part of, long may it continue. To all of my friends here: thank you for helping to make the world a happier place :)

My schedule is just too crazy right now. I cannot keep on top of real life work, and doing NEaB admin jobs.

I am not going anywhere, and will still be here everyday in chat.  I anticipate that everything will return to normal around late April/May time. If I am still needed/wanted at that time I will surely dust off the gold wings and return. 

I hope you will all behave well whilst I am gone!

I think that this is a nice time to say thanks to every player in NEaB for making my time here so much fun! An extra special thanks goes to Garg for a great 5 years and for being such a good friend. I hope to still be around when NEaB celebrates its 10 year birthday!

A few players have been asking why I have been so (unusually) quiet lately. To save me typing the same thing out again, I thought I would give everyone an insight here!

As is usual, the cause is simply too much work in real life. Back in October I was invited to speak at a conference in Antwerp. I thought it would be hard work but good experience (and a free trip to Belgium). Initially, I was under the impression it would be an oral contribution mainly with other postgraduate researchers organised by a member of staff.

After agreeing to speak I discovered it was a professional conference, and I would be the only postgraduate presenting. Additionally, a written paper of 8000 words is also needed! So, I am pretty snowed under with this and my own research and some teaching. This busyness will continue at least until March. I am still here every day, and do not intend on going anywhere. I am still “doing” things like bug reports etc, just not chatting so much (need to concentrate). Anyhow, speak to you all later!

Well it seems I wasn't in the best of moods yesterday

It was not intended to sound quite so...sarcastic. I was simply frustrated with NEaB and with my research, and that post was the result.

I did not mention that we do have a core of players who appreciate what we do! And that just because people moan, doesn't mean they are always unhappy (they just like to moan! Which is something...human). Also I have made some genuine friends, some still playing and some not...

So sorry for injecting your day with such....negativity....yesterday. Today proved to be much better. Keep smiling

The new place to live thing entered a new stage! Unfortunately it has revealed something...worrying...about my state of mind. I am no longer a young and trendy guy (if ever I was) and yet I am not willing to get my cane, fedora and cape either. This leads to odd things, a mixture of old manishness and recklessness.

For example, we decided to start CAREFULLY looking for somewhere to live in September and discussed sensibly NOT to impulse take the first place we saw. We went to see about 10 places...and then decided to take to the first place we saw! This place is not the chic apartment (all minimalistic and trendy) in the centre of a busy city that I always imagined it would be. Oh no, it is a mid-terrace house with a garden out in *gulp* suburbia! We did some maths (how sensible) and decided we could EASILY afford it, then I reviewed the maths after applying for the lease and realised my spreadsheet had faulty logic and things will not be quite so easy (reckless).

Even more worrying we started to look for furniture. Looking around all the trendy shops I found myself moaning that the most modern furniture was uncomfortable, not practical and too close to the ground. I was inexplicably drawn to leather (bleh!) sofas. As if this wasn't enough I even started to look at "bedding plants" for the small strip of dying grass that was a garden with the house! In order to reassert my youth I HAD to make an impulse purchase. So I grabbed the first thing at hand (a gas BBQ) despite the fact it rains most of the year, we don't YET have a garden and I am not a good cook. I will continue to FIGHT the onset of middle age, perhaps a new wardrobe of "hip" clothing is in order? Even then I fear I would end up buying slippers and a new dressing gown.

For those that have not seen me so much in NEaB the past few days, some little update.

Currently I am working marking exam scripts from students, doing some research project for the University, preparing my own private research and looking for some place to live from the Summer!

So all in all...hectic
